Yat Malmgren (1916 - 2002) was a colleague of Rudolf Laban's and in 1954 received Laban's final papers on his theory of 'Movement Psychology'. Yat Malmgren devoted the latter half of his life interpreting and expanding Rudolf Laban's movement theories into a precise and practical method for actors in their development of realistic characters for stage and screen performance.

This was the brainchild of two men – Yat Malmgren and William Carpenter – who basically took Laban’s techniques and adapted them to apply specifically to actors. At my drama school, the class was simply called “Yat” – an homage to Malmgren. So our Yat (Movement Psychology) classes were extremely complex.

His past students include Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy, and Emilia Clarke. To honour and preserve the work of Yat Malmgren (who died in 2002), in his retirement Christopher has written the defining book about Character Analysis / Movement Psychology – A Peopled Labyrinth. It is the only book that deals comprehensively with the subject of ‘The Histrionic Sense’ or the Law of Expression. This course integrates the work of Yat Malmgren, Rudolf Laban, and Uta Hagen.
